The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is a large dry region in the northwestern part of the Indian landmass that covers an area of km2 ( sq mi) and forms a natural line between India and Pakistan. It’s the world’s 20th-largest desert, and the world’s 9th-largest hot tropical desert. About 85 of the Thar Desert is in India, and about 15 is in Pakistan. The Thar Desert is about4.56 of the total geographic area of India. Other than 60 of the desert lies in the Indian state of Rajasthan; the portion in India also extends into Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana.
At the same time, the desert supports a enough rich biodiversity with several large mammals, especially the blue bull, blackbuck, and Indian gazelle or chinkara. They were formerly the prey for lions and cheetah, which reportedly lived in the southern land of the ecoregion until the turn of the last century.
