Shingo La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of5.048 m(,561 ft) above the sea place, located on the boundary of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, in India.
The road to the peak, also known as Shinkun La, Shinku La or Shingu La, is completely unpaved. It’s called Shingo La Road. 4×4 vehicles only. erected in 2015, the new road connects the Lahaul Valley with Zanskar Valley. The road is really dangerous. Avalanches, heavy snowfalls and landslides can come anytime, being extremely dangerous due to frequent patches of ice.
There’s a shallow lake or pool 20m below the pass. The pass is on a long- distance path linking Zanskar( 2) and Lahaul, used frequently by locals and climbers also. For trekkers it’s one of the technically easiest 5000m passes in Indian Himalaya, involving no glacier journeying nor steep climbs.
The pass is56.8 km(35.29 country miles) long, running south- north from Darcha to Kurgiakh. The area is prone to avalanches and due to the heavy snowfalls in the region, it remains private for vehicular activities from October onward till June every year. There’s snow on the pass all year round, although in the summer only a small stretch of snow has to be passed. A tunnel is being erected to bypass the road.
