Girnar Hills – Gujarat

girnar hills

A group of mountains near Junagadh in the Junagadh District of Gujarat, India, is called Girnar, Girinagar, or Revatak Parvata. Girnar is regarded as sacred, and both the mountain and its range are thought to be older than the Himalayas. During the Girnar Parikrama festival, both Hindus congregate here, making it an important place of pilgrimage. Jain temples were built later on, some of which are quite recent. Girnar is one of the five major “tirthas” attributed to various “Jain tirthankaras” by their “panch kalyanakas.”

Among Shiva devotees, Girnar is also significant for the mountain range’s so-called “mystic space-time,” which features the presence and turnover of various Sadhu Baba sects, including the Nath sect. The Maha Shivratri fair is one example of a flora and fauna fair held in the mountains. At the tops of Girnar, numerous Jain monks and Tirthankaras have visited and performed severe penance. Throughout its range, it has a number of temples and historical sites. The mountain range is the center of religious activity, situated in the Gir Forest’s lush greenery.
